The ice rink in front of the Civic Centre in Swinton has taken a lot of stick, from last year's pink offering to the costs of upkeep. Some of the more vocal Salford residents have called it a "total waste of money" and even "propaganda".

But is the criticism justified, from people who actually try it out, or is it political point-scoring and a bit of bah, humbug?

Could Cllr John Merry actually be right when he said:

"For many residents the economic climate has made this a stressful, uncertain time. We will be doing all we can as an authority to help people through it. In the meantime, we hope that this rink will help provide a little light relief and seasonal cheer."

Tom Rodgers investigates.

Born To Perform

Born to Perform runs on Saturdays from 9-12 for children aged 7-16. We run for an average 12 week term and use up to 3 weeks for confidence building and technique and the remaining weeks working towards a performance shown back to family and friends on week 12.

The main difference between us and other fee paying stage schools is that we are affordable, most range from £260-300 per 12 week term - ours is £120 (this amounts to just £3.33 per hour). We are also not into promising stardom. We set realistic goals and maintain that the academy is about growing and development and not becoming famous.
