Lower Kersal Young People’s Group allotment project
By Lesley Lever

This was the group’s first crop this year. We have worked in all weathers and have produced some amazing vegetables, herbs and some flowers. It was a learning process for all of us, especially myself and the young people.

To plant something and watch it grow from seed is a fantastic experience, especially the corn was brilliant. We grew a wide range of things including potatoes, onions, tomatoes, chives, parsley, peppers, peas, beans, basil, beetroot and radish! We have met a lot of good people on the allotments and they have given us some seeds of their own for us to plant or produce for us to eat.

We would like to thank Rob Fulton and Paula Taylor from Groundwork, who helped give us informal horticultural training and weekly sessions to start us off, and Youth Bank, who have funded the project for the next 6 months.

Any young people aged 12-19 interested in the group, or any adults who wish to become volunteers, please phone me on 07909 748 986.

Archaeology with the community!

Archaeology with the community!
There is a new Research Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford (but based in the CUBE building on Portland Street in Manchester).

The work of the Centre includes involving people from local communities, helping them to learn more about the history of their locality, and the chance to be trained in archaeological techniques. This might also be an interesting way to encourage both physical activity and learning!

If any local community group or school wants to know more, or become involved in digging up the past, they should contact:

Mike Nevell (Head of Archaeology) m.d.nevell@salford.ac.uk or Brian Grimsditch (Community Archaeologist) b.grimsditch@salford.ac.uk
